The concept of United Motor Works germinated in 1902, when our founder, Chia Yee Soh, then a lad of 14 years working as an apprentice in a small bicycle shop in Singapore became fascinated with a new contraption - a motorcycle which was brought in by a customer to have the tyres fixed. Interested in all things mechanical, Chia not only fixed the tyres but proceeded to dismantle the motorcycle and in the process encountered difficulties in reassembling it! This incident led to Chia’s absorption into the mysteries of the internal combustion engine. He decided to set up his own automotive repair shop in 1917. He named it United Motor Works. |
