The concept of United Motor Works germinated in 1902, when our founder, Chia Yee Soh, a lad of 14 years then – became an apprentice in a small bicycle shop in Singapore. Along came a customer, to have the tyres fixed for a new contraption - a motorcycle. Interested in all things mechanical, Chia not only fixed the tyres but also dismantled the motorcycle – with some ensuing difficulty when trying to assemble it again! This incident led to Chia’s absorption in the mysteries of the internal combustion engine. He decided to set up his own automotive repair shop in 1917. He named it United Motor Works.

In October 2008, UMW's corporate history book, Turning Points: The UMW Story, was launched. It is a published account of the company's 91-year history.
