A day at PAWS

UMW Petrodril Sdn Bhd (UPSB) volunteers came together on 17th May 2009 to give abandoned, abused and unwanted animals at Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) a better home.

The volunteers sacrificed their Sunday and rolled their sleeves as they painted the corridor and compound at PAWS despite the hot and humid weather.

The treat for these animal lovers was the opportunity to play with the adorable animals which included cats, dogs and even a monkey. It was satisfying for the volunteers to know that they contributed to a cleaner and brighter shelter.

Special thanks go to Power Engineering Sdn Bhd for contributing paint materials and UPSB staff and their family for their time.

“Projek Kitar Semula”

UMW Petrodril (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (UPSB) launched a recycling program on 26th June 2009.

The program named “Projek Kitar Semula” was the second Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in the year 2009. Partnering Yayasan Salam, this program will be ongoing and items collected will be donated to the beneficiary once every two months.

Aimed at cultivating a sense of responsibility towards the environment among staff, items collected are not limited to recycling but will also be donated to Yayasan Salam for fund raising.

The recycling committee would like to thank everyone involved for their kind contribution and look forward to more support. As this is an ongoing program, continued donations are most welcome.

How can we do our part?

  • Dedicate a little time to clear unwanted things from your desk / work station. Then decide which of the items can be recycled and put them into the recycling bins placed at the office foyer;
  • Print out double sided copies;
  • Circulate a document instead of making a copy for every person;
  • Increase the amount of paper recycled by purging old files; and
  • Have central files to reduce duplication - this not only saves paper, but office space as well.

About Yayasan Salam

In addition, they also provide havens where orphans can come for food and shelter. Educational and recreational activities are also provided for the less fortunate.

A visit to Rumah Soleha

UMW Petrodril (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (UPSB) marked it last Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity for the year on 11th December 2009 as volunteers visited Rumah Soleha situated at Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras.

Counselled by Mr Chuah Chong Tiam, the Director who was appointed by the committee as the advisor for this event, the visit started with a welcome speech by Pn. Wan Hawa, the Home’s Administrator.

Pn. Wan Hawa shared with us the challenges she faced as a guardian: Her struggles to raise funds and gain support from the government and the public and to provide essential items for the home.

After the speech, the program continued with an appreciation speech by CSR project leader, Ms Noor Hafizzah.

‘Kotak Beracun’ was the first game played with the children. The children enjoyed the game and everyone sang together when the music played. After the game, the group went on to decorate cup cakes. The children decorated cup cakes by using their creativity.

The program ended with a photo session. Overall, the day was fun everyone exchanged laughter with the children. The visit to Rumah Soleha was an eye-opener to all participants.

Talking to the children and spending some time with them made the participants realise that what all these HIV infected and affected children and women really wanted was for people to love and care for them.

About Rumah Soleha

Rumah Soleha is a halfway home for women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Established in 1998, the shelter provides assistance and temporary shelter for HIV positive children and women who are abandoned by their families. A visit to Old Folks’ Home

UMW Petrodril Sdn Bhd (UPSB) in collaboration with Yayasan Salam Malaysia organised a visit to Pusat Jagaan Keluarga Old Folks Home at Section 16, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, on 15th August 2009. The event was supported by more than 20 caring and responsible UPSB staff.

The Home currently provides care for 25 registered senior citizens. Most of the residents are put in the Home by their family including children. Some of the residents suffer from critical illnesses such as stroke, cancer and diabetes. Others have no where else to go because they have no next of kin.

They also spent time chatting with the elderly and listening to their stories. The volunteers also engaged a magician and a clown to entertain the residents.

Tree Planting at FRIM

UMW Petrodril (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (UPSB) organised a Tree Planting Day at Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Kepong, on 24th October 2009 as part of the October Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program.

FRIM is a statutory body governed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. A world reputed centre, FRIM plans and implements research for the development of the forestry sector and conservation of forestry resources.

Volunteers from UPSB worked up a sweat, planting 20 Tongkat Ali saplings provided by FRIM. Graced by Sam Raj, Country Sales Manager of Pentagon Freight, the activity showed commitment and teamwork as staff worked together to build better and greener future for generations to come.

FRIM was also involved in providing practical guidance at the event. The saplings were planted at a designated area located at the Perah Campsite. A plaque was then signed and placed on the ground as a commemoration of UPSB’s contribution. Going forward, FRIM will conduct their routine ground and landscape maintenance such as watering, weeding and maturing.

Besides allowing the team to appreciate the beauty of nature and understand the importance of environmental conservation, UPSB Tree Planting Day also helped all participating members relax from the daily hustle and bustle in the cool, refreshing and peaceful environment.

UPSB would like to thank Pentagon Freight, Malene Insurance Brokers, the BDM department and staff for their contribution to making the event a success.

Blood Donation Campaign

We often hear about the shortage of blood in hospitals. People need blood to live. Blood supply only come from a donor, a person like you who make the choice to donate. Have you ever been a donor before? Imagine what will happen if your mother, father, friend or your loved ones need blood due to a medical condition but there is no blood supply?

Blood is needed for people who suffer from leukemia, blood disorders, cancer, sickle cell, anemia, during surgery, accidents victims and other illnesses. People who suffer from Thalassaemia also need regular blood transfusions to continue living.

UMW Petrodril (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. has recently taken the initiative to organize its first blood donation campaign to kick start its CSR Programme for 2010. The program was held at The Centrum, Level 18 on the 25th February. The blood donation drive was collaboration with Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) to help replenish its blood bank as well as to create awareness on the need for blood to save lives.

The campaign was not only limited to UMW Oil and Gas staffs but was also open to all tenants of Plaza Sentral. The campaign received tremendous support - 99 of 123 donors were eligible to donate blood transfusion. After donation, each donor was given healthy snacks and vitamins to help in recovery. All donors received a face towel as a token of appreciation.

The CSR Committee thanks all donors for their contribution to the cause. UPSB plans to hold another campaign soon and make it an annual event on the CSR Programme list.

“Against The Use of Polystyrene Containers” Campaign

“THE EARTH DAY” falls on the 22nd of April every year. The Earth day was created to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. In conjunction with The Earth Day, UPSB-CSR Committee had launched a new campaign “Against the Use of Polystyrene Containers” among the UPSB staff.

What is Polystyrene?

  • Polystyrene is a petroleum-based plastic made from styrene monomer.
  • Also known as Styrofoam, which is the trade name of a polystyrene foam product used for housing insulation.
  • Polystyrene is a light-weight material, comprising about 95% air, with very good insulating properties and is used in all types of products from disposable cups that keep your beverages hot or cold to packaging material that keep your computers safe during shipping.

Against the Use of Polystyrene Containers, Why?

  • Acute health effects are generally irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal ;
  • Styrene is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA;
  • A 1986 EPA report on solid waste named the polystyrene manufacturing process as the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste;
  • Toxic chemical from the polystyrene will leak into food kept in polystyrene containers;
  • Polystyrene manufacturing releases hydrocarbons into the air at ground level; combined with nitrogen oxide in of sunlight, they form tropospheric ozone –a serious air pollutant at ground level.
  • Polystyrene foam is often dumped into the environment as litter. This material is notorious for breaking up into pieces that choke animals and clog their digestive systems.
  • These products are made with petroleum, a non-sustainable and heavily polluting resource
  • Many cities and counties have outlawed polystyrene foam (i.e. Taiwan, Portland, OR, and Orange County, CA).

On the first week of The Earth Day, emails were sent to all UPSB staffs to educate them about the campaign. The CSR team established a petition for all staff to participate in the campaign. The CSR Committee will give away lunch boxes to participants as a way to promote an earth-friendly environment and to eliminate the usage of polystyrene. These lunch boxes will be distributed once the petition has been signed and approved by our director, Mr Chuah Chong Tiam.

A Visit to Wisma Harapan

A group of UPSB staff paid a visit to Wisma Harapan in Brickfield KL on 30th June 2010. Wisma Harapan is a home for the mentally handicapped and also the headquarters of the Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped founded in 1964 as a non-profit voluntary organisation.

The group arrived at Wisma Harapan at approximately 9.30am and were introduced to Mr Kamaraj, the principal of the school. As an ice breaker, UPSB staffs introduced themselves before going through the power point presentation about the association and its activities with Mr.Kamaraj.

After the presentation, the activity for the visit commenced with a clown show. The clown, Mr Coconut, performed several magic skills to the delight of the children. The children also actively participated in the musical chair game. Mr Coconut then rewarded the children for their enthusiasm by giving those balloons in all sorts of shapes such as animals, flowers, etc.

After the games, KFC lunch boxes were distributed to the children which they very much enjoyed. In addition to this delicious treat, goodie bags were distributed to them to take home.

All good things must come to an end and the time finally came to say goodbye. It was almost painful to see the children’s sad faces. Nonetheless we were assured that they will be well looked after and with a proposed continuous programme by UPSB for the children, we knew that we had made an impact in their lives. Some proposed programme includes teaching the children to read in English and Malay, dancing, cooking, swimming and computer classes.
A big thank you to all UPSB staffs who took time off from work to participate. Visiting these special children who need our love and care may not be much of a sacrifice on our part, but we can be rest assured that even small token like these means the world to them.

Keceriaan Menjelang Syawal – Part I

The much awaited and blessed month of Ramadhan was celebrated in September this year. UPSB CSR Committee had taken this opportunity to help a poor family and an orphanage in Petaling Jaya. Since Ramadhan is a month that is synonymous with the act of giving to the less fortunate, the Committee decided to provide for their daily basic needs as well as for their Hari Raya preparation.

A family was selected based on a survey conducted by the CSR Committee based on its income level. The identified families were also recommended by the Committee of the Local Women Society in that community.

The CSR committee went to the selected home at Taman Medan in Petaling Jaya on the 30th August 2010 to hand out some basic needs such as rice, sugar, flour and new Hari Raya clothes for 7 children aged between 2 and 17 years old.

There were smiles of happiness on the children’s’ faces as they already knew about the new clothes. They tried on the clothes and luckily for them it all fitted nicely.

The CSR committee expressed their happiness for being able to put smiles on the children’s faces and to help a less fortunate family. It made the committee realize how fortunate they all are. They have learned to be more thankful and appreciate all of God's bounties as a direct result of this activity.
