The history of UMW stretches back to 1917 when the Group’s founder, Chia Yee Soh occupied a small shop lot in Orchard Road, Singapore and named it as United Motor Works. Chia Yee Soh’s exceptional ability in mechanical had attracted much attention in Singapore, especially the wealthy car owners and due to that, United Motor Works had become one of the most sought after automotive repair shop in Singapore. At the same time, Chia Yee Soh succeeded in obtaining the distributorship of automotive parts for the American automotive giant General Motors. His business thrived to a point where it became necessary to consolidate it through the establishment of United Motor Works Pte Ltd in 1927, a predecessor company of UMW.
